With that in mind, Houston Astros designated hitter Evan Gattis is anything but a typical major league hitter. He's a free-swinger with little discipline but immense power. Power that was on display Wednesday when he did, in fact, turn on Trevor Bauer's eye-level 94-mph fastball and lined an absolute rocket two-run home run to the left field concourse at Progressive Field. [ Play a Daily Fantasy contest for cash today!l ] The exit velocity of Gattis' home run is unknown at this time, perhaps because it left the bat too quickly to register a reading. The measured distance was 372 feet, which is really of little consequence when you consider the pitch location.  Setting the numbers aside, it's simply one of the most impressive swings we've seen all season. Impressive enough that Bauer, the pitcher whose earned run average was damaged by Gattis' swing, could only shake his head and say "Wow."  ";s:8:"category";s:3:"mlb";s:4:"guid";s:90:"urn:newsml:sports.yahoo,lego:19780928:top,article,fdddbbc0-0c56-3695-8484-5c89172b739f-l:1";s:7:"pubDate";s:29:"Wed, 08 Jul 2015 20:34:25 PDT";s:12:"pubTimeStamp";i:1436412865;s:4:"kidx";s:32:"39d71b8e2de75904800eaa0f3c129bd5";s:16:"guid_isPermaLink";b:0;s:10:"categories";a:1:{i:0;s:3:"mlb";}s:6:"source";s:12:"Yahoo Sports";s:10:"source_url";s:45:"http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/hou/rss.xml";s:11:"source_link";s:23:"http://sports.yahoo.com";s:11:"source_kidx";s:32:"85181b36d53b49d77bf7559ea0e8190c";s:15:"source_orig_url";s:45:"http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/hou/rss.xml";}s:32:"0cd62f870b7dbd85015e9416f651778c";a:15:{s:5:"title";s:79:"Murphy's double leads Bauer, Indians over Astros 4-2 (The Associated Press)";s:4:"link";s:152:"http://us.rd.yahoo.com/sports/rss/mlb/SIG=135cldi2j/*http%3A//sports.yahoo.com/news/murphys-double-leads-bauer-indians-over-astros-4-015750255--mlb.html";s:11:"description";s:300:"Terry Francona knew the matchup called for a right-handed batter. We've already looked at the surprises of the first half , so we have to look at the disappointments next. Baseball lets us down. Often. You know this. And we're not talking about the small failures that happen every day. We're talking about the big-picture disappointments, the high-profile teams and players who don't deliver.  [ Check out Big League Stew on Tumblr for even more baseball awesomeness. ] It's part of the game. It happens. But that doesn't make you feel any better when it's almost the All-Star break and the team you thought could win a World Series is puttering along.  We're sorry if your favorite team is on the list. There's always next year. Or, in some cases, the second half. THE PADRES Granted, I didn't think the rebuilt San Diego Padres would win the NL West or the World Series, but I thought they could contend for a wild card. So it's disappointing to see a team go through such a drastic and bold rebuild only to come out on the other side in just about the same place. What difference have Matt Kemp, James Shields, Wil Myers, Craig Kimbrel, Justin Upton, Derek Norris and the rest of them made? The Padres are 39-47 as of Wednesday, fourth place in the division. One year ago, they were 40-50, third place in the division.  There's chatter now that the Padres might start trading some of their players. Upton, for instance, is a free agent at the end of the season. The Padres rebuild was a risky one from the jump ? and not just because teams who make the biggest offseason splashes don't always produce. There were legit question marks about players like Kemp, who is hitting .242 with six homers and 44 RBIs, and Myers, who still can't seem to shake the injury bug. But it's been the pitching that's disappointed most. The Pads have the 11th worst team ERA in baseball, with neither Andrew Cashner nor Tyson Ross taking a big step forward this year. At least they had December. We all love a good surprise and, in sports, we love them even more. That's why the Kansas City Royals were the feel-good underdogs of 2014. And why there are people outside of Houston hoping that the Astros can keep up their surprising success of 2015. In the first installment of our midseason review, we looked at the biggest stories of the season . Some people were stumped that the Astros didn't get any love. We were just saving it for this post. Here are our five biggest surprises of 2015, including the Astros and beyond. THE ASTROS The Houston Astros haven't posted a winning record since 2008. In fact, the team lost at least 90 games in each of the last four seasons. In three of those four seasons, the club piled up more than 100 losses. For those reasons, the Astros have to be viewed as the biggest surprise of 2015. At 49-36, Houston amazingly has the second-best record in the American League. Dallas Keuchel has led the way, and has turned himself into a dark horse Cy Young candidate. The team has also received a strong contribution from rookie Lance McCullers. Offensively, it's been a team effort. George Springer was off to a great start before a recent injury, Jose Altuve is doing his thing again and rookie Carlos Correa has looked every part of the savior thus far. It's pretty clear this team is no longer a punching bag. Taking on the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, Marisnick showed off his sparkling defensive skills in the sixth inning when Brock Holt lifted a fly ball to left-center field that look destined to carom off the Green Monster for extra bases. Not on Marisnick's watch though. [ Check out Big League Stew on Tumblr for even more baseball awesomeness. ] Running full sprint to his right, Marisnick crashed into the iconic wall and caught the ball mid-jump. It's definitely one of the best defensive highlights we've seen this season. However, despite Marisnick's efforts, the Red Sox went onto win the game 5-4. The Green Monster is infamously unforgiving. The way Marisnick went for the ball without any fear is pretty impressive, especially considering he had just been activated off the DL before the game. He even received a round of applause from the fans in Boston for his trouble. Real recognize real. That's what the cool kids say, right? A crisp Collin McHugh easily could've been called a stopper after Friday night, when swings and misses were common and the righty followed his predecessors in the rotation by giving the offense more than ample chance. The trouble is that any deficit, a couple runs or a couple touchdowns, is harder to traverse for the Astros right now than a Florida sinkhole. All of two extra-base hits Friday were refreshing in a 3-1 Astros loss, but the sequencing at Tropicana Field played out with disappointment similar to Thursday in Cleveland.
