The BC Lions Football Club announced today that quarterback Mike Reilly has been traded to Edmonton Eskimos.

As part of the deal, the clubs have swapped second round selections in this year’s Canadian Draft (BC now has the 11th overall selection in exchange for the 14th overall selection) as well as acquiring Edmonton’s second round selection in the 2014 Canadian Draft.

“I was approached by Edmonton GM Ed Hervey seeking permission to talk to Mike before the free agency period began and in light of Mike’s desire to explore opportunities to become a starting quarterback, I believed a trade was doable,” said Lions VP of football operations and GM Wally Buono. “We thank Mike for his time with the Lions and he will be missed.”

The BC Lions Football Club officially announced this morning that wide receiver Shawn Gore has elected to forgo free agency and has re-signed with the team.

“I am very happy that Shawn has re-signed with our club rather than explore free agency,” said vice president of football operations and GM Wally Buono. “He is a young and very exciting receiver who I believe will give all of us many great moments in the future.”

Gore enters his fourth season with the Leos in 2013 after being selected in the second round (10th overall) in the 2010 Canadian Draft.

“Shawn is an outstanding player who works extremely hard each and every day,” said Lions head coach Mike Benevides. “I believe we’ve only seen a fraction of Shawn’s potential and we are all excited at the prospect of him developing into one of our league’s premier talents.”

Enjoying another effective season in 2012, the speedy wideout led the Lions with 722 receiving yards and was second with 62 catches in 18 games. Shawn recorded a season-high 96 yards on September 15th versus Toronto, a game which included a 48-yard reception, his longest gain for the year.

“I’m very excited to re-sign with the Lions and I feel like the sky is the limit for our club,” said Gore. “Being part of this community has been an amazing experience and I’m thrilled at the prospect of continuing my career as a Lion.”

After three seasons, Shawn has now appeared in 48 regular and post-season games recording 122 receptions for 1,558 yards and six touchdowns. His reception yards rank second among all Canadian receivers trailing only Saskatchewan’s Chris Getzlaf. In 2012, he became the first player other than Geroy Simon to lead the club in receiving yards since 2002.

TEAM Radio

Sports radio personality and TEAM 1410 BC Lions pre and post-game show host Bob Marjanovich has been named Vancouver's Most Philanthropic Sports Broadcaster of 2012 by The Stadnyk Foundation.

The Most Philanthropic Sports Broadcaster honour is a new addition to the Paul Carson Broadcast & Media Awards designed to recognize excellence and performance in sports radio, television and print journalism.

Marjanovich, who hosts the Evening Show Mondays through Fridays and Sports Saturday on TEAM 1040, earned the distinction from The Standyk Foundation on the strength of his fund-raising leadership and support in the community; most notably in connection with the Michael Cuccione Foundation. Marjanovich lends his name and services to a number of Cuccione Foundation events throughout the year but is being honoured specifically for the leadership he's shown in organizing “Moj's Whistler Shootout” golf tournament fund-raiser.

Marjanovich raised more than $50,000 in 2012 through Moj's Whistler Shootout and other special events held in conjunction with the Cuccione Foundation.

The special award in sport philanthropy is being announced in conjunction with nominations for the nine other categories of the Paul Carson Broadcast & Media Awards. Lions play-by-play man Rick Ball and colourman Giulio Caravatta have also received nods in their respective categories.

Carson, a popular Vancouver broadcaster and local pioneer in sports radio and television, passed away in December of 2010 after a courageous battle against pancreatic cancer. He helped create what is now TEAM Radio, comprised of TEAM 1040 and TEAM 1410, in the period leading to its launch in 2001.

THE CANADIAN PRESS

Angus Reid has surprised many people by extending his CFL career - himself included.

The BC Lions centre signed on for a 13th season and, possibly a 14th, on Tuesday after he finished the 2012 campaign wondering about his future.

"I went into last season completely prepared that it was my last year,'' said Reid after a state-of-the-franchise luncheon with media heading into the Lions' 60th season.

Reid signed a two-year deal - one plus an option. The Lions also announced defensive back Ryan Phillips signed a contract extension.

"I'm one of the very fortunate athletes,'' said Reid. "Very few athletes ever get to end on their own terms, particularly playing 13 years. You can do it after year four or five sometimes. But you go this long, generally, the management will show you the door.''

When the season ended after a disappointing loss to the Calgary Stampeders in the CFL's Western Final, he felt he was looking around the team's BC Place dressing room for the last time and also contemplated retirement as he cleaned out his locker at the team's Surrey training facility.

Although Reid spoke of his desire to return that day, he wanted to see if he was physically and mentally ready to handle the long off-season training regimen after having surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow and clean up debris on his left hand and right wrist.

Now, he is looking forward to helping the Lions train his replacement.

"I wanted to be involved in helping groom the next centre,'' said Reid.

General manager Wally Buono said the Lions are looking to replace Reid with Matt Norman, until now a guard, who excelled as a rookie while also taking much of his first CFL season off to pursue his teaching studies before returning for the Western Final.

The mentoring role was not something that Reid, who had to battle to keep his job in 2010 after dealing with a broken foot, was ready to accept initially.

"I had never taken a personal stake, because a few years ago I was still in the meat of my career,'' said Reid. "You wouldn't want to groom someone to take your job while you're still in the meat of it. But I'm nearing the end now, if not past my due date. Anybody that has a job for a long time, I think it's part of their responsibility to help mentor the next person to take over.

"So, when that time does occur, hopefully, it's a seamless transition.''

Reid, a native of Richmond, BC, anchored a Lions offensive line that allowed a league-low 30 sacks in 2012. He earned a CFL all-star nomination for only the second time in his career. He won in 2011, but not in 2012.

He took pride in the new deal after Buono, then the team's coach, had planned to end it after 2010, rendering Reid a backup that season.

"There was a time heading into the 2010 season that it was told to me that would be my last season and they were going to move forward,'' said Reid.

"It wasn't that I refused to accept that,'' he said. "It was, I just kept going with what I knew what to do, which was keeping working at my craft, helping out, and the opportunity arose for me to go back in there, and I made the most of it. And I proved that I could still play this game.''

The 36-year-old was a 2001 first-round draft pick of the Toronto Argonauts out of Simon Fraser University but joined the Lions later that year after being dealt to BC by the Montreal Alouettes.

His new deal was announced at the swanky Vancouver Club, a much more posh situation than when he joined the Lions.

"I was traded, I was in Montreal and I came home, and I hadn't had a chance to tell my mom yet,'' he recalled. "She called, because she heard (about the trade) on the radio as she was coming home from Safeway. She nearly drove off the road, because she did a quick U-turn to go back to buy a nice, big roast of beef to have ready for my return.''

Buono's said Reid's latest return "calms the waters'' as the BC offensive line faces change at the centre position. The Lions also face turnover elsewhere on the offensive line.

Guards John Hameister-Ries (back, leg) and Dean Valli (knee) face uncertain futures after undergoing surgery to repair ongoing health issues, Jesse Newman is retiring, and all-star tackle Jovan Olafioye is contemplating a return to the NFL after the St. Louis Rams voided a contract last year because he was off his medication for hypertension and failed a physical.

Norman, a 24-year-old Chateauguay, Que., native out of the University of Western Ontario, did not practise regularly at centre last season. But Buono said the second-year pro has demonstrated that he has the proper "football I.Q.'' and temperament for the centre position.

Phillips will return for a ninth CFL season after earning league all-star honours in 2012. He has started 114 straight games, the longest active streak in the league heading into next season.

Phillips, 30, is a three-time CFL all-star who has helped B.C. win two Grey Cups (2006, '11).

The BC Lions Football Club announced today that receiver Geroy Simon has been traded to the Saskatchewan Roughriders.  Specific details were not disclosed.

“After many weeks of discussion with Geroy, we have reached a point where we believe it’s in the best interest of both parties to move forward with a mutually agreed upon trade,” said vice president of football operations and GM Wally Buono. “Geroy’s accomplishments as a player are well documented and his work in our community has been outstanding. We salute and thank Geroy and wish him the very best.”

Geroy Simon: “My 12 seasons with the BC Lions have been the most incredible years of my professional life.  I want to thank the entire BC Lions organization for giving me the opportunity to become a true professional.  Most notably, I am extremely grateful to Mr. Braley, Wally Buono, Dennis Skulsky, Mike Benevides, as well as my teammates and coaches for all their years of support.  The fans in BC have treated me as one of their own since I arrived here in 2001, and I'll never forget it.  I'm looking forward to a new and exciting opportunity in Saskatchewan.”

Simon departs the Lions as a two-time Grey Cup champion as well as the club’s and the CFL’s all-time leading receiver with 15,787 yards (14,756 with BC). Last year, the six-time CFL All-Star was limited to 700 yards on 54 receptions in 13 appearances.
