He's an amazing facilitator, the kind of player who creates good shots for limited players and joins up with other stars to form dominant tandems. On Tuesday night, Nash hit a milestone that confirms just how great he's been over the course of his 17-year career. With seconds left in the first half of the Los Angeles Lakers' road game against the Houston Rockets, Nash found Antawn Jamison on a pick-and-roll for the 10,000th assist of his career. He's only the fifth player to hit the mark, joining John Stockton, Jason Kidd, Mark Jackson, and Magic Johnson in a special group of point guards. (As Curtis Harris noted on Twitter, Oscar Robinson retired with 9,887 assists and likely would have hit 10,000 if the NBA schedule had been 82 games for his entire career.) [Related: NBA Power Rankings: Clippers remain No. 1 ] Nash left the game in the second half to receive some medical attention in the locker room, but he did return to play most of the fourth quarter. He finished the night with 16 points and 10 assists, yet that wasn't enough to save the Lakers from their fourth loss in a row. The Rockets won 125-112 on the strength of a huge third-quarter run, proving yet again that the Lakers have many holes. On this night, at least one player managed to make a bit of history in defeat. White, who suffers from anxiety , missed the first few days of training camp , secured a bus to take him to several road games, and then refused an assignment to the Rockets' D-League team due to concerns that they were not honoring the wishes of White and several doctors. Over the past six weeks, White has reiterated his issues with the Rockets' treatment of his situation (albeit in fairly vague terms describing the NBA's lack of protocol for mental health issues, not the specific actions of the Rockets). The Rockets' front office, for its part, has mostly stuck to bland corporate-speak regarding their commitment to seeking a long-term solution with White. This holding pattern broke last week, when the Rockets reassigned White to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. White refused the assignment once again. He also gave a fairly thoughtful radio interview to SiriusXM's "Off the Dribble" show, in which he showed some understanding of the Rockets' responsibilities and avoided placing blame on the organization, instead describing his problems with the broader culture of the NBA. Although White and the Rockets didn't come closer to an agreement, they did take steps toward bringing their issues towards some kind of solution. On Sunday, the Rockets took that step forward by suspending White for "refusing to provide services." But while the 21-year-old big man has been a revelation for the Rockets, hitting nearly 65 percent of his shots and averaging better than 16 points and 10 rebounds per 36 minutes, his game still needs some polishing. One key area for development? Court awareness. Knowing where you are on the floor at all times is important at the highest level. Another? Self -awareness. Knowing your limitations ? what you can and can't do on the floor ? can be the difference between also-rans and All-Stars. During Wednesday night's game against the New Orleans Hornets, Smith took a step forward in both areas, learning A) that he can't tie his shoe in less than three seconds, and B) that if he's going to try, he shouldn't be in the paint while the Rockets have the ball: Sure, you'd figure a player would have the "don't just kneel down in the lane and tie your shoe during a play" thing down by the time he got to the NBA, but hey, life is about learning, and we're betting coach Kevin McHale ? who was pretty mortified by the whole thing ? promptly took to instructing Smith about the dos and don'ts of the matter. The Oklahoma City Thunder countered the Miami Heat's undersized lineup by benching their starting frontcourt players, Kendrick Perkins and Serge Ibaka, for the final 14 minutes of Game 1 and were able to rally and win 105-94. The smaller quintet is nothing new for Oklahoma City, particularly since the signing of Derek Fisher in March, but it has paid dividends in the Western Conference finals and then in Game 1. Durant came into the league as a supersized shooting guard, moving over to small forward after Scott Brooks was promoted to head coach around Thanksgiving in 2008. [...] he has played more frequently as a perimeter-oriented power forward. Bosh said he thought the Heat got too comfortable settling for jump shots they're confident they can make - and he vowed to personally be more aggressive.

SAN ANTONIO - For a brief moment, the Spurs were the darlings of the pro basketball world, a breathtaking ball of butcher knives that had normally sober, measured pundits wondering if they might sweep their way to a fifth NBA title. Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili were the two best players in the Western Conference finals, capable of orchestrating for the Spurs any shot they wanted. Two losses in Oklahoma City later, the Spurs return to the AT&T Center for Game 5 on Monday night, the series evened at two games apiece, with many of those same pundits wondering if the Spurs will win again. In a blink, a 20-game winning streak became a two-game losing streak.

Patrick Patterson sat up on a training table at Toyota Center, but he was not there for therapy. Patterson, 23, finally had his long-planned ankle surgery before last season, but his rehabilitation cost him all of training camp, forcing him to spend much of the lockout-condensed season catching up. At coach Kevin McHale's suggestion, he has remained in Houston to sweat through workouts at Toyota Center during the day and the occasional Dynamo game at night. Patterson made 55.8 percent of his shots as a rookie, showing quickness and explosiveness at the rim and on defense. According to basketball-reference.com, he made 61.4 percent of his attempts inside 10 feet as a rookie. [...] Patterson feels so much better he has set goals for his third NBA season. Averaging 7.1 points and 4.2 rebounds through two seasons, he said he is aiming to average 13 and seven, help the Rockets reach the playoffs and win the Most Improved Player honor.

The Rockets will meet with Lin, who was in their training camp for 12 days before he was waived and eventually picked up by the New York Knicks, on Wednesday in Houston, a person with knowledge of the plans said. A contract similar to the Rockets' agreement with Asik could push the Knicks well into the luxury tax in the deal's third season, when the NBA's more stringent tax penalties take effect. Because of the "Arenas rule," the Rockets can offer $5 million the first season and $5.2 million in the second season. Lin became a Knicks and NBA sensation with a month of stellar play, especially while Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire were out. [...] time the charm? [...] Lin was a phenomenon for a large portion of the regular season, going from sleeping on a teammate's coach and days away from being cut again to becoming an international icon, spawning "Linsanity" with back-to-back Sports Illustrated covers and enormous popularity.

Baylor ex Jones out to move discussion forward In a first round particularly crowded with players with intriguing and still confounding combinations of potential and question marks, Jones could be considered the most unpredictable, with the greatest gulf between upside and warning signs. Jones shows no concern that he will live up to his ample ability. Most of all, he said the workouts with teams this month were a chance to demonstrate an intensity that had been in doubt. Show that I can get out there in workouts and just bring all the energy I can to the floor. All are considered certain first-round picks. Robinson will follow Davis quickly, potentially with the next pick, and Henson will also likely be gone by the time the Rockets are on the clock with the 14th and 16th picks Thursday. With analysis from Rockets vice president of player personnel Gersson Rosas: Scout's view: Physically gifted wing with strong scoring ability. Quincy Miller Baylor 6-9, 219 10.6 ppg, 4.9 rpg Scout's view: Well-regarded prep prospect. Accomplished college career. Barring major changes, they could be deep with young players at small forward, including Chandler Parsons, Marcus Morris and Chase Budinger. Scout's view: Physically gifted, an elite athlete. The Rockets expect a bounce-back season from Patrick Patterson following a second ankle procedure. Donatas Motiejunas, a first-round pick last season, is expected to sign in the first week of July.

A special road trip for coach's daughter Rockets players and coaches did not know if they could help but were certain they had to try. About 40 members of the team, coaches and staff flew to Minneapolis immediately after Tuesday's game to attend the funeral of McHale's daughter, Sasha, who died on Saturday at 23 of complications of the disease Lupus. There was a moment of silence "to honor Sasha's life" before the pregame introductions for Tuesday's game, with a photo of Sasha McHale filling the video boards at the center of the arena. Rockets players wore a green band on a purple background on their uniform shoulders. The organization chose green because it was Sasha McHale's favorite color and purple to signify the Lupus Foundation. [...] green and 32, with the McHale family, that can only mean one thing, Rockets acting head coach Kelvin Sampson said, alluding to the fact that her father also wore that number during his playing career with the Boston Celtics. The Rockets altered travel plans and postgame routines to leave rapidly following the game. Players have exchanged messages with McHale since he left the team but have had relatively little contact since last week, when Sasha's condition took an unexpected turn for the worse. The Rockets received permission from the NBA to fly to Minneapolis, rather than Oklahoma City, after Tuesday's game.

[...] it was a good Thursday for the Rockets' new media partners, Clear Channel Radio and Comcast SportsNet Houston. Sports Business 101 dictates the best way to launch a new channel or a new stadium is to sign a marquee player, and Lin's signing coincides with the Rockets' efforts to sign sponsors and radio affiliates to join their new flagship, KBME (790 AM), and as CSN Houston lobbies cable systems for carriage. Lin will bring real excitement and visibility to CSN's distribution and advertising sales efforts. Lin's presence will almost certainly boost Nielsen ratings, which will boost ad revenue, which in turn will boost the Rockets and Astros, who together own 77.3 percent of CSN Houston. Another key question is whether even in areas where Rockets games cannot be seen live, Linsanity will be sufficient to convince cable operators in, say, Austin or Corpus Christi to pick CSN Houston so fans can follow the network's Rockets news and feature shows.

Ray Allen's 3-pointer with 22.6 seconds left gave the Heat the lead, and the Heat rallied late to beat the Spurs 105-100 on Thursday night - needing to dig deep despite San Antonio's decision to have four standouts resting at home in a move that irked NBA commissioner David Stern. Tiago Splitter scored 18 points for San Antonio, which finished a six-games-in-nine-nights road trip with a record of 5-1.
